How to Report a Potential Scam Post on Reddit

Scammers use Reddit because it is trusted. A friendly comment linking to a "support" page, a giveaway or a user pretending to be a company can all be traps. If you see one, you can help by reporting it correctly. If it uses your brand, you may need to do more.

Common signs

• Urgency or pressure, such as "act now".
• Payment by gift card, crypto or wire transfer.
• Requests for logins or one-time codes.
• Lookalike web addresses.
• Impersonation of a brand or support team.
• Offers that are too good to be true.
• New accounts that post the same message in many places.

Step 1: collect evidence

1. Copy the link to the post and the account.
2. Screenshot the post with username, community and date.
3. Copy link addresses as text without opening them.
4. Save any messages you received.
5. If it is your brand, keep proof that you own it.

Step 2: report on Reddit

Open the post menu, choose Report and pick the closest category, such as spam or impersonation. Add a short note: "This account pretends to be [Company] support and asks for gift card payment."

Step 3: message the moderators

Use the community's modmail. Include the link and one line of explanation. Many communities ban scams outright.

Step 4: report the account

Repeat for the user account if the behavior is a pattern. Block the account if it messages you.

Step 5: legal channels

If the post uses your trademark or copies your content, Reddit has separate processes. Only file what you can support.

Step 6: report fraud outside Reddit

• Your bank or card issuer, immediately if you paid.
• The Federal Trade Commission.
• The FBI's Internet Crime Complaint Center.
• The host or registrar of a lookalike website.

If you shared a password, change it and turn on two-factor authentication.
