How to Remove a Negative Google Review

You cannot delete a Google review yourself, but you can flag one that breaks the rules. Here is how the process works and how to give your report the best chance.

A one-star review sits at the top of your listing and nobody asks you first. If you want to know how to remove a negative Google review, start with the truth: you cannot delete it. You can ask Google to remove it if it breaks Google's policies, and you can reply to it publicly. This guide explains both.

Key takeaways

  • Only the reviewer or Google can remove a review.
  • Google removes reviews that break its content policies, not reviews that are only negative.
  • A specific, accurate flag works better than a general complaint.
  • If the review stays, a calm public reply is your best tool.

Which Google reviews can be removed?

Google's review policies are public. In summary, reviews may be removed when they are:

  • Fake or not based on a real experience, including reviews from people who never visited or used the business.
  • Posted by someone with a conflict of interest, such as a competitor or a former employee with a grudge.
  • Spam or advertising, including links and promotions.
  • Off-topic, for example a rant about politics that does not describe a visit.
  • Offensive or hateful, including harassment and threats.
  • Sharing private information.
  • Duplicates or reviews posted for the wrong location.

A review that is rude but describes a real visit usually stays.

Step 1: read the review carefully

Look at the text, the date, the reviewer's profile and any photos. Ask: does this person appear in my records? Does the description match something that happened? Is there a policy it could break? Write your answers down. They become your report.

Step 2: flag the review

Sign in to the account that manages your business profile, find the review and use the flag option. Choose the category that fits best and, where Google offers a text box, explain briefly. Specific wording helps: "This reviewer describes a visit to our Denver branch, but we have no Denver location" is better than "This review is fake."

Step 3: track the result

Google shows the status of flagged reviews in the reporting tool. If a review is declined, you can appeal once with new information. Avoid repeated flagging of the same review. It does not help.

If a review makes a false statement of fact that causes you harm, Google has a legal removal request process. It is slower and more formal, and Google may ask for details. Talk to a qualified attorney before you rely on it.

Step 5: reply publicly

A public reply cannot remove a review, but it often improves how readers see it. Keep it short, polite and factual. Thank the person, state the relevant facts, offer to resolve the issue offline and avoid arguing. Our guide on how to respond to a negative review gives examples.

Common mistakes

  • Flagging every bad review. Flags on honest reviews can be ignored.
  • Offering money for deletion. It can breach platform rules and backfire.
  • Posting fake positive reviews. This breaks Google's rules and can lead to penalties.
  • Arguing in the reply. Future customers read your tone.
  • Giving up too early. Specific appeals sometimes succeed where the first flag did not.

What about old reviews?

Reviews that are several years old can still be flagged. The difficulty is evidence. Records may be incomplete, and the reviewer may have changed their profile. Be realistic and focus on whether any policy applies.

How we can help

If you have many reviews, an older review or you simply want a second opinion, our negative review removal service reviews each review against the policies and prepares the report. We do not promise removal because Google decides, and we never write fake reviews. See also Can Trustpilot reviews be removed?

Frequently asked questions

Can I delete a Google review on my business profile?

No. Only the reviewer, or Google, can remove a review. Business owners can flag reviews that break Google's policies.

How long does Google take to review a flagged review?

Google does not publish a fixed time. Some reports are decided in days, and others take longer. Check the status in your profile and avoid flagging repeatedly.

Will Google remove a review just because it is unfair?

Not unless it also breaks a policy. Reviews that are honest but harsh normally stay.
